About the Award
The Chevalier Award, sponsored by Tony and Emmy Award-winning actor Courtney B. Vance, recognizes the best performance of an aria by a composer of the African Diaspora.
The award honors the legacy of Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges—an extraordinary 18th-century composer, violinist, conductor, and one of the most accomplished musicians of his time. His contributions to classical music have been historically overlooked, and the Chevalier Award seeks to honor his legacy while bringing greater recognition to composers of the African Diaspora.

WE INVITE SINGERS OF ALL BACKGROUNDS TO APPLY FOR THE CHEVALIER AWARD.
Singers applying to the Pasadena Vocal Competition who perform a work by a composer of the African diaspora are invited to submit for the Chevalier Award as part of their competition application. To be considered, singers must submit a recording of the qualifying piece with their application. Applying for the Chevalier Award is optional and is not required to compete in the Pasadena Vocal Competition.
